The four types of cover, and what each is for

Most people need some combination of these rather than all of them. The right mix depends on who depends on you and what would actually happen if your income stopped.

  • Life insurance pays a lump sum or income if you die, so your family can clear the mortgage and keep their standard of living. The most common and usually the cheapest cover.
  • Critical illness cover pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed with one of a defined list of serious conditions. It buys time and choices at the point you need them most.
  • Income protection replaces a proportion of your income if illness or injury stops you working. Statistically the most likely of these to be claimed on, and the most commonly overlooked.
  • Private medical insurance covers the cost of private treatment, usually valued for speed of diagnosis and access to treatment.

Why independent advice matters more here than people expect

Protection looks like a commodity and is not. Two policies with identical premiums can differ enormously in what they actually pay out, because the definitions matter: which conditions a critical illness policy covers and at what severity, whether income protection pays until you can do your own job or any job, how long the deferred period runs, and whether the premium is guaranteed or reviewable.

An adviser who can only sell one insurer’s products works within those definitions. We compare them across the market, which is where the real difference between a policy that pays and a policy that argues tends to sit.

Probate & Estate Administration

Administering an estate is daunting at the worst possible time. We guide executors through the grant of probate, settle debts and taxes, and distribute the estate properly, with a fixed quote agreed before any work begins.

Writing life cover in trust

This is the single most valuable thing many people never get told. A life insurance policy left outside trust usually forms part of your estate, which means it can be taxed at 40% for inheritance tax and cannot be paid out until probate completes.

Written in trust, the same policy pays out to your family quickly and outside your estate. It generally costs nothing extra to arrange, and it is one of the clearest wins in financial planning. We arrange this as standard where appropriate, alongside our trusts and inheritance tax planning advice.

Protection for business owners

If you run a company, the same principles apply to the business. Shareholder protection provides the cash for surviving owners to buy out a deceased shareholder’s shares. Key person cover compensates the business for losing someone critical. Relevant life cover provides company-paid life cover for a director, usually as an allowable business expense. See our business owner planning service.

Protection FAQs

How much life insurance do I need?
Usually enough to clear the mortgage and any debts, plus a multiple of your income to support your family. The right figure depends on your circumstances, which is what the first consultation works out.
What is the difference between critical illness cover and income protection?
Critical illness pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a specified serious condition. Income protection pays a regular replacement income if illness or injury stops you working, whatever the cause. They solve different problems and many people benefit from both.
Should my life insurance be written in trust?
In most cases yes. It keeps the payout outside your estate for inheritance tax and lets your family receive the money without waiting for probate. It usually costs nothing extra to arrange.
Is protection insurance worth it if I am single with no children?
Life cover may be less important, but income protection often matters more, because there is no second income to fall back on if you cannot work.
Where are you based?
